The Jazz FM Awards 2020 with OANDA have announced today that legendary, 14-time Grammy-winning pianist Herbie Hancock is to be the recipient of this year’s PPL Lifetime Achievement Award. The news follows the recent announcement that Norah Jones will be presented with this year’s Impact Award.
Live streamed at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho on Tuesday October 27th, the awards will be hosted by UK comedian, actor and regular Jazz FM presenter Marcus Brigstocke.
Marcus Brigstocke:
“‘Music is life itself’ - Louis Armstrong. For me it’s been the route through these last few difficult months. So, the opportunity to celebrate the musicians who thrill and entertain us all is as good as it gets. I can’t wait to host The Jazz FM Awards with OANDA. Live from Ronnie’s too! This will be fun.”
Sarah Mitchell, Director of Membership and Communications at PPL:
“The Jazz FM Awards with OANDA hold an important place in the musical calendar, celebrating a genre rich with UK talent. This is especially true now as a new generation of jazz artists and musicians receive critical acclaim for their work. As well as recognising new talent, it also presents the opportunity to celebrate the contributions of those who have made jazz what it is today. Herbie Hancock is a deserved winner of this year’s PPL Lifetime Achievement Award after decades of innovation in the genre, and we are looking forward to presenting him with his award at this year’s ceremony.”
Having been postponed earlier this year due to coronavirus restrictions, The Jazz FM Awards 2020 with OANDA will now take place as a closed event at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho on October 27th and will be livestreamed on both the Jazz FM and Ronnie Scott’s Facebook pages alongside special dedicated programming on Jazz FM.
Since launching in 2013, The Jazz FM Awards with OANDA has become one of the most highly anticipated events in the music industry calendar, providing an opportunity to celebrate both emerging artists and established stars from across the genre’s increasingly vibrant and diverse community. Previous recipients include the likes of Quincy Jones, George Benson, Dame Cleo Laine, The Rolling Stones, Gregory Porter, Don Was, Hugh Masekela, Shabaka Hutchings, Nubya Garcia, Esperanza Spalding, Laura Mvula and Georgie Fame.
Amongst the nominees this year are legendary US saxophonist Charles Lloyd, iconic soul singer and Earth Wind & Fire founding member Philip Bailey, Brit Award Rising Star winner Celeste, four-time Grammy-winning Jacob Collier, genre-bending Anderson .Paak and the Mercury-nominated drummer Moses Boyd.
The Jazz FM Awards with OANDA is made possible with support from PRS for Music, PPL, Mishcon de Reya, Cambridge Audio, Arqiva, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Blue Orchid Hotels, Denbies and Saville Row Gin.
