Rihanna insists she was the obvious choice to record a theme for the new Star Trek movie, because she's a huge fan of the sci-fi franchise.

The R&B star has just made history by releasing the video for her new Trekker single, Sledgehammer, becoming the first artist to shoot a promo entirely with IMAX cameras.

And the Umbrella singer, who plays a mystical alien with face tattoos in the video, has confessed she jumped at the chance to record a tune for Star Trek Beyond's soundtrack, because she's a life-long Trekker.

"Star Trek has been a part of my life since I was a little girl," she says. "It just took me one episode to fall in love with this other world that I couldn't understand but I felt I could relate to. It's never left me. It wasn't just doing a song for any film, I love Star Trek."

"I'm very, very honoured to be a part of this film," she adds.

Meanwhile, the unexpected Star Trek fan turned heads at a gig in Manchester, England on Wednesday night (29Jun16) when she was joined onstage by rumoured boyfriend Drake.

The couple performed their hit single Work together, with Drake fuelling the romance reports by kissing the singer on the neck.

The rapper also performed his latest hit One Dance during the concert at Emirates Old Trafford.

Drake and Rihanna were also spotted leaving a club in London at 6am on Wednesday morning.

Rihanna's Manchester date was the final night of her U.K. tour.

She debuted her eye-popping new video at IMAX cinemas in the U.S. on Thursday (30Jun16), and the promo is now streaming online.
