Ryan Seacrest says Randy Jackson's American Idol departure is "bittersweet".
The host of the singing talent contest was left noticeably surprised when long-serving judge Randy announced he would be leaving the series at the end of last week's episode.
The star chose to reveal his resignation at the end of Thursday night's season 12 finale in a move that surprised even those closest to him.
"It's bittersweet, because I love the guy," Ryan said to MTV about last week's announcement. "I want him to go do what he wants to do. I love him and I can't imagine walking out, going down those stairs and not seeing Randolph Jackson sitting behind the panel. [I'm] proud of what he's brought to our show for 12 years now."
Randy's departure means that next year Ryan will be the sole remaining original star left on American Idol.
The TV personality put any questions over his return to rest by declaring he will be back for season 13 of the hit show.
"This is me barely standing," he joked. "I am coming back, yes. I will host."
In the statement issued last week, Randy explained more about his decision to quit the series. He hinted that fans can expect more music business ventures from him to come in the future.
"Yo! Yo! Yo! To put all of the speculation to rest, after 12 years of judging on 'American Idol' I have decided it is time to leave after this season," Randy stated. "I am very proud of how we forever changed television and the music industry. It's been a life-changing opportunity but I am looking forward to focusing on my company Dream Merchant 21 and other business ventures."
