JAY-Z has praised his wife Beyonce for her "understanding" in the wake of his infidelities.

The 48-year old rapper has spoken candidly in the past about his infidelity in his relationship with his superstar wife Beyonce. And in an interview with Letterman for his new Netflix show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, he returned to the subject.

Letterman, who is married to Regina Lasko, opened up about his own marital issues during the chat. The U.S. talk show veteran was famously forced to go public with his infidelities in 2009 when he was blackmailed by a man who had knowledge of his extramarital affairs.

"At the time the pain that I caused myself was the fear that I had blown up my family... And I'm wondering if this rings a bell with you," he asked the rapper, reported the Hollywood Reporter.

"Yeah, of course. For a lot of us, we don't have, especially where I grew up and men in general, we don't have emotional cues from when we're young," he responded. "Our emotional cues are 'Be a man, stand up, don't cry!'", adding his 2002 single Song Cry was an attempt to address his fears.

"I want to have the emotional tools that it takes to keep my family together," Jay told Letterman. "And much like you, I have a beautiful wife whos understanding and knew I'm not the worst of what I've done. We did the hard work of going to therapy and you know, we love each other, right? So we really put in the work," he added of the couple's commitment to staying together.

"Like you, I like to believe we're in a better place today," he continued. "But we're still working and communicating and growing. And I'm proud of the father and the husband that I am today because of all the work that was done."

Rumours about Jay's cheating reached fever pitch when Beyonce, 36, released her visual album Lemonade in 2016, and the father of three addressed the speculation on 2017 album 4:44.

The full interview will debut on Netflix on Friday (06Apr18).
