The Mercury Prize nominees and Ivor Novello winners (Best Album for So Long, See You Tomorrow) recently returned for the first time in four years after announcing their hiatus in 2016, to much anticipation from fans and industry alike. The comeback track ‘Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You)’ was certainly worth waiting for, and offered an exciting glimpse into the sonic palette on new LP Everything Else Has Gone Wrong – described by The Independent as “an album that upholds Bombay Bicycle Club’s position as one of indie music’s most inventive bands.”
Last year saw Bombay Bicycle Club’s seminal album I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose turn 10 years old; they took to the road and played the album in full on a UK tour to celebrate, with all shows selling out in seconds. The indie rock band from London have a total of five incredible albums to their name, including So Long, See You Tomorrow, which topped the charts back in 2014. Expect to hear indie anthems such as ‘Always Like This’ and newer tracks such as ‘Is It Real’ and aforementioned single - ‘Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You)’ during their headline show in Victoria Park.
Also featuring is BRIT nominee Loyle Carner, one of the hottest hip hop artists the UK has to offer. The South London MC entered the scene with EP A Little Late back in 2014, following this up with his Mercury Prize nominated debut album, Yesterday’s Gone, in 2017. Both projects highlighted Loyle’s dexterous rapping prowess and his introspective, authentic and relatable lyrics – and last year’s Not Waving, but Drowning further reaffirmed his talent and solidified this status. Make sure to catch his massive energy at All Points East this summer.
British singer/songwriter/guitarist Lianne La Havas returned this week with her first new music since 2016. The song ‘Bittersweet’ was a timely reminder of her natural talent - a gorgeous, soulful track influenced by the 1970s Brazilian sounds of Milton Nascimento as well as the girl group harmonies and empowerment of Destiny's Child. Expect even more music from the Grammy nominated artist to follow in the coming months, and All Points East will be one of the first times to catch this live.
Mercury Prize and Ivor Novello nominees Everything Everything are also set to perform. The indie-rockers from Manchester have never boxed themselves in when it comes to sound, exploring a range of genres, including afrobeat and R’n’B melancholia, as well as an extensive use of synth, guitars and a falsetto voice leading the way. Their latest release, Live with The No.6 Orchestra, was a collaboration with arranger and composer, Joe Duddell, seeing them create unique orchestral re-imaginings of songs from throughout their catalogue.
Nadine Shah captured the hearts of the nation via her Mercury Prize nominated 2017 album Holiday Destination, also winning several accolades including the AIM Awards 'Independent Album of the Year'. She returned this month with new single ‘Ladies For Babies (Goats For Love)’ and announced that her highly anticipated forthcoming album Kitchen Sink will be out June 5. Not one to be missed.
Born in Washington, D.C., singer/songwriter and producer Nick Hakim grew up in a household overflowing with musical diversity and cites influences ranging from Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, to Madlib and MF Doom, to South American folk and DC punk. His stunning 2017 debut LP Green Twins was described by Pitchfork as “soft-spoken love songs that erupt into psychedelic hymnals.”
Mercurial British singer/songwriter Nilüfer Yanya rode a series of soulful guitar-based indie pop EPs and singles like ‘Small Crimes’ and ‘Baby Luv’ to widespread acclaim in advance of her 2019 full-length debut, Miss Universe. Her eclectic style can partly be attributed to the music of her parents, who have Turkish, Irish and Bajan heritage. Rejected twice from a popular music degree she sought her own path, rising from the capital’s open mic nights to being nominated for the BBC Sound Of award in 2018.
Progressive pop trio The Orielles are already on their second record, earning plaudits for their inventive style of cosmic psychedelia, inspired by a variety of genres including Korean dance music, Turkish funk, and Italian experimental cinema soundtracks to name a few. The young band’s latest record Disco Volador is out today, with Q describing it as an “impressively idiosyncratic meeting of suddenly shifting rhythms, breezy toplines, old-school synths and imperious riffs.”
Forming back in 2013, indie rockers Gengahr made an immediate impression on fans and industry alike. Invited by Huw Stephens to play Glastonbury for BBC Introducing just a year later, the band haven’t slowed down since, and now have three fantastic albums to their name. January 2020 saw them release their most recent record, Sanctuary, defined by Dork as “boldly more expansive and electrifyingly curious.” Make sure to catch their performance in Victoria Park on May 22.
Also featuring is Liz Lawrence, who has toured alongside headliners Bombay Bicycle Club in the past as well as performed alongside them as a backing vocalist/instrumentalist. Her 2019 LP Pity Party (that was self-produced) showcased why she is held in such high regard, combining lo-fi guitar chords, subtle string motifs and her rich vocals to great effect.

The event gave first festival headlining opportunities to Christine And The Queens and Bring Me The Horizon, brought The Strokes to the UK for the first time in 4 years, celebrated Chemical Brothers’ new album and saw Mumford & Sons triumph before Bon Iver closed the festival, exclusively debuting two new tracks from his now released new album i,i.
Incredible headliners were just part of the story with the quality of artists running very deep indeed – Primal Scream, The Raconteurs, Hot Chip, Rina Sawayama, James Blake, Kate Tempest, Metronomy, Snail Mail, Mac DeMarco, Maribou State, Jarvis Cocker, Toro Y Moi, Dizzee Rascal, Jade Bird, Ezra Furman and Run The Jewels were just some of the many guests performing across the stages at All Points East.

East London’s beautiful Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets also hosts a hugely popular 4-day community focused midweek event each year. Kicking off on the second Bank Holiday Monday, In The Neighbourhood, in collaboration with Tower Hamlets Council, hosts a vibrant four day programme of activities and entertainment, in collaboration with the local community, businesses, organisations and suppliers. Last year had something for everyone - eco-friendly creative workshops, free yoga sessions, street food, open air movie nights, themed drag shows, film panels, an exploration of the history of grime music and East London with Rich Mix’s Generation Grime:Back2Bow. All Points East continue to work each year with local charity the Tower Project to give volunteer opportunities to young people with learning disabilities and autism on site at the festival, as well as providing education and performance opportunities to the students of nearby ELAM arts and music school. Committing to 100% renewable energy, working towards eliminating single-use plastic from all serve ware and programming up cycling workshops for children during In The Neighbourhood are further examples of the commitment to the local community and the park.
