Born in 2009, "Paper Aeroplanes" is a Welsh duo formed by Sarah Howells and Richard Llewellyn. They released their third album, "Little Letters", earlier this year. Their delicate melodies, their highly relatable and sensible lyrics and Sarah's vocals are a fantastic mix that leads them to have a constant growing fan base.
Through this album, "Paper Aeroplanes" had three main goals; first, they wanted to make more noise and, therefore, used a wide range of instruments to accompany their melodies: drums, violin, cello and percussions. Second, they wanted to write and sing about how we communicate to each other in this era. They wanted to explore relationships and how they were expressing themselves differently nowadays. Finally, Sarah and Richard wanted to keep true to their duo by holding on to their style, often described as alternative folk (whatever that means!).
Are these missions accomplished? Answer is… YES! There is definitely more to the music than just guitars on "When the window shook" or "Palm of your hand". It is very enjoyable and gives a bigger dimension to the album: you can listen to the lyrics and their meaning or you can just dance in rhythm and appreciate the tracks for what they are: music!
"Little Letters", as an album, definitely explores emotions and situations that we can all face in our everyday lives. It goes about love and its complications, about communicating, about changing and evolving. The lyrics have deep meanings and anyone can connect with those words. The melodies are enhancing the vocals and music and lyrics work hand in hand to send shivers down and up your spine.
"Fable" is a definite favourite: it goes about how you can find strength in your lover and how, despite how they can feel insecure about themselves, they can give you wings. It is almost about the fact that each other's flaws make us stronger as a duo.
"Little Letters" is an amazing song, very catchy. It is easy to get it stuck in your head but it won't cause annoyance, just the pleasure of fine music and delicious lyrics hitting you like a hot wave.
"Red Rover" is also a great tune about how we should probably just open our hearts to whatever life and others have to offer. Again, the music is precious and tender.
Does "Paper Aeroplanes" keep their style in this new CD? Definitely! If you like them already, get "Little Letters" and walk with no fear as you will be, without a doubt, satisfied. If you just found out about them, check them out and let that Welsh duo win you over with their very unique and honest approach to music
