The fact that Gavin DeGraw is currently on tour with Train will not come as a surprise to anyone once you are more than a minute into this song. Best I Ever Had is 2013's Drive-By basically - the same fast talking verse, but thankfully the chorus is a more traditional DeGraw singalong.

Having produced four albums of top quality power pop, DeGraw is largely unknown in the UK, and those unaware of his catalogue of music will do well not to judge him from this over-hyper single. Starting like it's been put on the wrong speed, it rattles along a such a pace you are left breathless. DeGraw says the lyrics reflect many of his social observations - and that varies greatly from a political reference to drones, to a dig at modern day gig goers who are "all on their phones".

This may well be a deliberate ploy to gain chart recognition - and like Train - gain a new lease of life from a big radio hit. But if that's the case - it is disappointing, because one Drive-By is quite enough for anyone - and DeGraw is better than this - much better. Hopefully any new album will have more of his former style and less of the swagger.
