Performing tracks from her upcoming album “Halcyon” at an intimate gig at the Jazz Café in Camden, Ellie Goulding blew away any concerns over “Second Album Syndrome” with a down-to-earth display of catchy tunes and defined progression.
Referring to the venue as “like performing in my living room”, Ellie displayed a nervous edge, seemingly almost overawed by the rowdy support despite performing at the massive iTunes Festival weeks earlier. After stumbling through the opening track, she soon got into her stride, playing tunes from the new album mixed with first album hits and laughing with the chatty crowd.
The stand out tracks from the new album “Figure 8” and “Anything Could Happen” got the rowdy crowd bouncing proving that Ellie’s lost none of her catchy pop appeal. The new album has been described as “folktronica” building on the electro-pop infused “Bright Lights”, the special edition follow-up to her debut “Lights”. The album retains all the cute pop sensibilities of the first with added kick, synth stylings and a whole host of drumming.
The excitable crowd sang back “Under the Sheets” and “The Writer” word for word adding to the sustained high energy levels in the tiny room. The crowd were also treated her beautiful rendition of “Your Song”. Slick and styled, Ellie hasn’t lost any of the beautiful vulnerability of “Lights” and still captivates with her quirky vocal gymnastics.
Over the last two years, Ellie has transformed from a raw young girl supporting Passion Pit in front of one man and his dog at the HMV Forum into a sexy lady with a polished sound and a hugely passionate following. All of this, at the same time as serenading American presidents and giving Adam Sandler a run for his money as the Wedding Singer.
