Vast... Epic... Immense… there are not enough superlatives to describe the debut album from Liverpool's Sound of Guns. The band who have been the city's best kept secret for quite some time have, with appearances at 2009's Glastonbury and Big Weekend festivals and the support of Radio 1's big players Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens, finally got to show the rest of the UK what they are about.

A different proposition and not the usual twangy guitar sound which has been associated with Liverpool bands in the past, Andy Metcalfe's passionate rock vocals shine through the vast soundscapes of the Chris Potter (Verve / U2) produced long player.

Sound of Guns are sensational live and thankfully much of the energy transfers into the studio. First single 'Architects' opens the 11 track album and what a way to start. I defy anyone not to turn this up and sing at the top of their voice, one of the anthems of the summer. The pattern follows with 'Alcatraz' and 'Elementary of Youth' both previously released in a limited capacity over the past 12 months or so. Fans favourite and highlight of the live shows 'Collisions' makes a welcome appearance and don't be surprised if this is picked up for a Sky Sports montage or two in the coming months.

The real surprise for me is the quality of the other tracks 'My White Noise', 'Bullets In The Bloodstream' and 'Backs of Butterflies' none of which can be classed as fillers and the latter especially is worthy of a single release in the future.

There's not just monstrous, riff laden rock tracks though, there is a softer side to the band with the sublime 'Gallantry' and 'Starts with an End' which rather fittingly closes the album.

The sound is sure to split the listening public with it's anthemic qualities but take note, this is not the doing of any record company executive, it's what SOG have always done and when you see them live you'll appreciate the songs even more.

This album is the kick up the arse that UK rock has been waiting for, potentially the most important debut since Kasabian's self titled release back in 2004

My only concern is where the hell are they going to go next??
