Like a Brazilian camaleao, Bristol-born Wayne Hussey has, over the years, constantly changed colour and re-invented his musical styles and directions. From punk to joining Dead Or Alive, from being the guitarist for Sisters Of Mercy to being the frontman for The Mission, and record producer in between - Hussey never fails to surprise or to impress.

Why should it be any different then with his latest solo album, the follow-up to the 2009-released Bare (a cover album)? Well, it isn’t really. What we get with Songs of Candlelight & Razorblades is an album of stunning intimacy and truly skilled word-smithery fused with diverse musical influences and Hussey’s trademark voice.
These days, Hussey is based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and that is reflected in some of the songs the album has to offer. Mellow, melodious and occasionally infused with the more traditional tunes that Brazilian folk has to offer, each of the 14 tracks holds its own charm and mystery.

The rather sombre titled ‘JK Angel Of Death (1928 – 2011)’ for example not only intrigues courtesy of dark lyrics but latino-inspired guitar hooks – adding uplifting undertones to melancholic overtones. ‘Swan Song (Lament)’ is a haunting and poetic love song – ethereal and dreamy while ‘Wasting Away (Reprise)’ – a lament about drug addiction it would seem, lingers on long after the last chord has faded out.

Echoes of The Mission ring through on ‘Wither On The Vine’ – blending the soft and mellow with rockier ingredients.
When Hussey sings “There’s no earthly cure for this heavenly disease” we instantly know that we are treated to a love song of subdued passion and multi-layered sensibilities. In contrast, ‘Devil’s Kind’ is unashamedly Americana influenced rock – executed in simple yet highly effective style that nonetheless blends in with the mood of the other tracks.

Closing track ‘Aporia’ challenges the listener with its complex structure and spoken word that is reminiscent of the work of Diamanda Galas. A truly haunting conclusion to a stunning solo album, and a long sonic journey by an artist who fell in love with music upon hearing Bolan’s T.Rex. Truly, one wonders what Hussey’s next effort might hold in store!
