This works on so many levels: the Hoax are a superb band and their raw Blues has power and emotion to spare while BB King is one of the true greats of Blues music and has left an indelible mark on the Blues world. Finally, this is a brilliant selection of songs that The Hoax play to perfection – bloody fine sah!
The band here are on excellent form, Robin Davey bass lines alongside brother Jesse and Jon Amor’s guitars are hard edged and they sound as though they are playing live while Hugh Coltman’s vocals are perfectly suited to an album of BB King numbers – emotive and passionate with a sweet tone that contrasts with the rest of the bands style. As always with the Hoax Mark Barret’s drums pound like steamhammers driving BB Kings songs along at pace.
They definitely are playing as though the music was new and there is a freshness about their playing that brings old songs to life – on of those rare occasions when a tribute album actually brings something worthwhile to the party.
