One Night Only released their debut album back in January 2008, and it quickly went Gold, and spawning the huge hit single Just For Tonight. They followed this with some major festival appearances at Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, T in the Park etc. Since then, frontman George has become the face of Burberry and is regularly glimpsed in fashion shoots and on 25ft billboards around the world.
Their new album, recorded in Brussels and produced by Ed Buller (Suede/Pulp/White Lies) has been written to capture the headrushing excitement of how it feels to ride this rollercoaster of fame. The whole album really is a rollercoaster that runs at some pace. Every track is a catchy, hook laden gem. At first they may seem a little similar, but after a couple of listens the tracks really do stand on their own.
From an influence and musical style the album really does seem to have a strong 80's feel. Some of the influences that seem very apparent as you listen include A Flock Of Seagulls, Talk Talk, Duran Duran, Ultravox, as well as times a leaning towards Keane's territory, although I'm sure in fact Keane would kill for some of these tracks now (especially 'Never Be The Same' and 'Chemistry')!!
Tracks like 'Forget My Name' are quite rocky but are still so catchy; 'All I Want' is surely the next single - emotive as they band almost plead on the chorus. 'Got It All Wrong' is equally as frantic and again has single written all over it (although to some extent any of these 11 tracks would stand up in it's own right!)
It’s an album of giddy, almost dizzying energy and excitement; bigger and more confident tunes than the boys making their debut could have possibly imagined, and a feeling of being catapulted into something tremendously exciting and perhaps a little troubling. I
t’s the story of chasing the end of the rainbow, what happens along the way and when you get there. One Night Only justifiably call the results a “quantum leap” that will take them to a whole new audience.
I have had this album on virtual non-stop play since getting hold of it a week or two ago - absolute perfect pop album. Potential support act for next year's (as yet unconfirmed) Take That concerts??
