A lot of investment is being put into Nikki Murray, who we previewed here on Music News several months ago, with the excellent pre-release track Complicated Head. Since then Murray has been to LA to mix his debut album with Steve ‘B’ Baughman, who has worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Pink and Eminem and whose recent credits include Game and Jeff Phillips.
While Complicated Head had an intriguing production and feel, Murray's debut single goes for the more instant appeal. And before you ask, it is not a cover of the Oasis classic. She's Electric is a far poppier, made for radio, track, which sounds more British than expected, given the American involvement.
Over some quirky keyboards and energetic guitar and drums, Murray sings of a girl with long dark hair and a special touch; “the way I am right now I wish I could describe, it’s easy for me see why all the boys they all love you.” Shakespeare it is not, but then this is not meant to challenge you.
Perky pop like this has done well recently, and while this is not as transient as Olly Murs, for example, it does fit more in the mould of songs you are unlikely to revisit in a year’s time. Signs are though that the album will contain more songs that linger longer in the mind.
