Jack Garrett’s one-man show sure makes an impression. The bass penetrates to your very core and on the top level of The Roundhouse sets off a worrying rhythmical shudder prompting more than the odd sideways glance. His gentler side also shows in the delicate acoustic numbers scattered in between the bass heavy beats which would find his music welcome in both club and cloisters alike. Always engaging, his audience banter and lively demeanor champions songs that are delicate and fragrant as well as hard and edgy. Definitely one to watch.
The main draw tonight was Mumford and Sons whose musical journey from smalltime London folk act to US stadium rockers has been that of fairytale.
It’s the first chance for many to hear this years number one album ‘Wilder Mind’ live unless you were lucky enough to see them triumph at Reading or Leeds – I can personally vouch for the Leeds headline slot.
The Mumford and Sons stage show has grown along with the stature of the band. One song flows smoothly into the other, Marcus’ vocals and drum spots enthrall, along with the horn section and fiddle, it seems there no end to this bands ambition. All executed with an effortless charm, clearly relaxed with just how far they have come.
The new songs fit snugly into the previous repertoire and the larger stage set shows of the fuller rock fuelled sound heralded on the new album.
Highlights included an unplugged rendition of ‘Cold Arms’ which saw the band gather at the lip of the stage to woo the intimate crowd, a ‘pin drop’ moment. Jack Garratt rejoining the band for Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams and the barnstorming Little Lion Man, which saw the whole venue singing along. Another formidable night at Apple Music Festival.
