Mediaeval Baebes

How many times have you heard Auld Lang Syne? Perhaps you might be growing tired of it of this rather syrupy old ditty. Does it still bring a tear to your eye when you think about what’s past? Cheer up! The Mediaeval Baebes have released a new (digital) single version based on the old Scottish version as penned by bard Robert Burns.

This version is rather more complex and less sentimental. With their classically trained voices the female British Ensemble need no instrumental backing – instead opting to perform the piece in tranquil harmony. In accordance with Burns’ original poem, the words are sung in old Scots and to the tune of a folk song. "For auld lang syne" appears in the first line of the chorus and might be loosely translated as "for old times sake".

I can’t see it getting into the charts – it’s a pity. If you’re looking for something a little different and beautifully executed, then this old/new version is for you. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a seasonal offering – you can enjoy this any time of the year, or perhaps even to celebrate ‘Burns Night’ on January 25th. One to tak for your collection!
