Thursday night saw the launch of Custom House Records – freshly formed by Richard England (Cadiz Music/Disturbing London) and Kate O’Brien.
Making its mark on the world’s music stage, guests were invited to an evening of eclectic sounds. Getting everyone’s ass moving were Rebecca Closure with their infectious, percussion-driven dance grooves and some wonderfully camp, sailor-inspired outfits.
Further entertainment was provided by The Penny Black Remedy, encouraging the audience to sing along to the band’s trademark sound that fuses ska, folk, gypsy punk and country – resulting in songs that deal with the absurdity of general existence.
With an additional DJ-set by Wonderboy, everyone had a great time boozing and grooving.
However, stealing the show were The Dogbones (see pic), fronted by flame-haired Nomi Leonard (at least that was her hair color of choice for the Custom House occasion). Whipping up a sneering sound that is best described as tribal post garage punk, the band consists of two drummers to ensure things are even more hardcore. Really, their wild stage show has got to be seen to fully embrace this twisted mix of raw animalism with an added pinch of saccharine.

With its crew, who are ingrained with the gritty, subversive attitude that the East End is notorious for, Custom House aims to bring forward the best in homegrown talent. Furthermore, the label aims to provide a platform to success for new designers and artists - working within subcultures across the UK and looking for and releasing material that blends genres and challenges the norm.
Finally, Custom House parties will showcase artists on its roster that you'll definitely want to hear more of.
