To people of a certain ages and interests a band calling themselves 50ft Woman could conjure images of 50’s B movies, giant plastic monsters and lurid trailers with manic voiceovers.

And, initially 50ft Woman could easily be classed as B movie kitsch, as they are fronted by Minki ‘a 6ft diva’ with a passion for very high heels. In photos and on stage that’s fine but with only a plastic disc to go on we need more. Luckily there is some real substance here.

The first song (Strictly) Only Swinging is catchy bubblegum pop with a slightly sinister air to it. Psychic Hygiene is an altogether heavier, meaner affair with nice dirty riff carrying it along. The EP is rounded off by You’re In Love With Love (But You Ain’t in Love With Me), an infectious slice of pop rock with some nice harmonies and guitar play. Minki? Well she has a fine voice that ranges from sleazy backstreet slut mode to god fearing nun. In fact the whole band’s performance is solid.

With nods to the American indie scene of the 80’s this isn’t the most original set of songs you are going to hear, but its good fun. The band sound as if they are enjoying themselves, though one can’t help feeling that live is where they really come to life.
