Seven years ago today the world lost one of the most influential radio people of the rock era, the BBC's John Peel.

He was widely acknowledged for being one of the first people in radio to play psychedelic rock when he first started broadcasting in 1967 and, over the years, was known for his wide knowledge of almost every genre of popular music from rock to dance to reggae. There are also numerous albums out in Britain featuring the John Peel Sessions, live performances from his radio program.

Peel passed away from a heart attack on this day in 2004 while on a working vacation in Peru.

The following is an hour long profile on Peel's life that was originally broadcast by the BBC2 on this day in 1999 to celebrate Peel's 60th birthday. It is in four parts.
