will.i.am believes America has “the flu” but is “inspired” by its youth.

The rapper and mega producer has been interacting with a very special group of children in recent months who participate in the FIRST Robotics programme. FIRST is an American organisation that promotes scientific leadership through technological and engineering training.

When thinking about the current state of affairs in his home country, will.i.am looks to the children at FIRST for inspiration.

“Right now America has the flu. We don’t have cancer. We’re just under the weather,” will.i.am explained in an interview with Cambio. “[FIRST is] computer science, community, competition, it’s creativity. Vitamin C. Boom. Helping America’s flu.”

Children who participate in the FIRST Robotics programme learn extremely complicated scientific methods, mathematics, formulas and sophisticated engineering. will.i.am was incredibly impressed by what he witnessed them performing.

“I was talking to a 14-year-old who was writing code and making LEGOs go 15 miles per hour,” will.i.am recalled. “I’m inspired by these kids, I’m inspired by programmes like this and I’m doing all I can.”

will.i.am believes that it is important to highlight how well these children are advancing. He would like them to take the limelight.

“For too long we’ve put the spotlight on entertainment only. You put the spotlight on these kids that have dedicated themselves in science, mathematics, engineering, robotics,” will.i.am said, “so my niece and nephew grow up to want to be like them.”

In his attempt to catapult these young engineers into the spotlight, will.i.am has produced a unique television show for American network ABC. The back-to-school special, which will air on Sunday, features visits by special guests like Bono, Britney Spears and Justin Bieber.
