The 28-year-old is working on his upcoming ninth studio album Tha Carter IV, which is due to be released in August of this year. Despite being a rap artist, the star’s musical tastes vary.

He is a fan of alternative rock band Nirvana’s hit Smells Like Teen Spirit, which was released in 1991. The track, which was sung by the late Kurt Cobain, is the lead single from the band’s second album Nevermind and was the group’s biggest hit.

“I was a real big fan of that because I was young. Do you remember The Box? Because of that you had to sit down and watch about ten videos you do not wanna see. It was still rare that a rock ’n’ roll video would come on, so when one do come on you were like, ‘No I didn’t order that.’ But Smells Like Teen Spirit was the only rock song that come on and you’d be like, ‘That one is OK, I can deal with that one,” he laughed in an interview with MTV.

Wayne - who has worked with a host of artists including Chris Brown, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Enrique Iglesias - enjoyed the song because it was relatable. The American was influenced by the powerful lyrics, which seemed to speak to him.

“I was young and I actually listened to the lyrics, I probably felt at that time, I was rebelling and I can associate myself with that. Relate to the things he was talking about in the songs. I probably couldn’t but I thought I could,” he added.
