The 48-year-old Poison rocker – who also suffers from the illness, which affects blood sugar levels – says he teaches 10-year-old Raine Sychak to be as healthy as possible and if she ever feels as though the condition holds her back he will feel responsible.
He explained: "We are doing everything we can to support her in leading a normal, healthy, active life. I’m trying to be a good role model for her.
"What I want to do is to show her day in, day out, that diabetes doesn’t have to deter her from her dreams. And if she ever feels like she can’t do something because of her diabetes, that’s when I’ll feel like I’ve let her down.”
Brett – who has Raine and another daughter, five-year-old Jorja Bleu Sychak, with his partner Kristi Lynn Gibson – admits he finds it challenging living with the disease, but at the same time it makes him realise how precious life is.
He explained to PARADE: “It requires a lot of diligence and a lot of determination on my part, but I never lose sight of the people and the things that inspire me to live a long a life.
"Surrounding myself with my family, my music, and my fans – that’s what helps me keep my health in check because it reminds me how much I want to be here and it pushes me to take care of myself.”
In 2010, Bret battled serious health problems when he suffered a brain haemorrhage in April, although he made a full recovery from the condition.
In May, he was admitted to hospital after experiencing numbness down the entire left hand side of his body and was diagnosed with a “hole in the heart." Again Bret made a recovery from the serious medical condition.
