The Columbian-born singer and her boyfriend – Argentinean political advisor Antonio de la Rua – parted ways last August, but decided to keep the news their romance had ended private until now.

In a joint statement on Shakira's website, the former couple said: "During our almost 11 years together we have loved each other deeply, taken care of each other and stood by one another.

"They have been the most wonderful years of our lives, and thanks to that love and the respect that we share for one another we have been an exceptional couple and partners."

Despite the split, the pair – who were rumoured to be engaged – explained they still plan to work alongside one another, as they have an "indestructible" friendship.

They added: "We move forward as partners, developing projects together, working hand in hand and in close communication. Our friendship and understanding of one another is unwavering and indestructible."

The 33-year-old 'She Wolf' hitmaker previously admitted she was keen to have children with Antonio, 37, once she had fulfilled her existing work commitments.

She said last year: "Do I have any plans for children? Little wolves? Yeah, of course. I'd really like to have kids, but first I need to go on tour and release this new album - and then we can sit down and talk about it."
