Tim Drummond, a veteran of many of Neil Young’s classic albums, has died on Saturday at the age of 75.
Drummond played bass with artists as diverse as Conway Twitty to Eric Clapton,
The St. Louis County, MO coroner’s office confirmed that Drummond had passed away but did not have a cause of death; however, there didn’t seem to be any evidence of trauma.
Born in Canton, IL, Drummond first started playing music when his father was transferred from Illinois to Charleston, SC and, upon their return home, began playing guitar in the local band Wild Child Gibson. Soon after, he became interested in the bass which he played in the regional group Eddie Cash and the Carriers before becoming the bassist for Conway Twitty.
When Twitty moved from rockabilly to country, Drummond left the group and moved to Cincinnati, OH where he played shows with the likes of Troy Seals and Lonnie Mack before becoming a member of James Brown’s band.
During the 70’s, Tim moved to Nashville where he played sessions for both pop/rock artists like Joe Simon and Jimmy Buffett along with country stars such as Ronnie Milsap and Charlie Daniels.
Drummond struck up a professional friendship with Neil Young in the early 70’s, playing on his landmark album Harvest and every one of Young’s releases up until 1980’s Hawks and Doves. He moved from Nashville to California where he became a highly respected session musician, not only playing on a long series of landmark albums but also co-writing some of their songs such as Bob Dylan’s Saved and J.J. Cale’s Who’s Talking.

Drummond’s passing comes just three months after the death of another of Young’s bassists, Rick Rojas.
