Taylor Swift apparently hopes her cats will pick her next boyfriend.

The singer is the proud owner of Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson, both named after her favourite TV characters.

She's had plenty of failed high-profile romance in the past, counting Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal and John Mayer among her exes. But now it's thought she would rather rely on animal instincts when choosing a suitor.

"Taylor no longer trusts her own instincts with men," a source opened up to the US edition of OK! magazine.

"So if she meets a guy, the cats have to meet him, too. She's not walking her cats around for exercise... they're her man-meter."

Taylor, 24, has probably been too busy to meet many potential boyfriends recently. She released the latest single from her upcoming album 1989 earlier this week and it went straight to number one on iTunes.

Out of the Woods was recorded in collaboration with Lena Dunham's boyfriend Jack Antonoff, who is the guitarist for fun. and also in band Bleachers.

In a recent YouTube video, the blonde singer spoke about the lyrics to the tune. She's known for writing about love and relationships and this song is no different, with speculation it could be about her brief fling with One Direction's Harry.

"This was a relationship where I was kind of living day to day," she explained. "It was a relationship where you kind of never feel like you're standing on solid ground."
