Sting is returning to acting to try and save his Broadway musical The Last Ship.

The singer will take over the role of shipyard foreman Jackie White in place of Jimmy Nail from December 9 through January 10.

The $15 million musical is in trouble financially as, since opening night on October 26, it has been grossing between $495,000 and $545,000 per week which is less than half of its gross potential and below an estimated cost of $625,000 per week to break even. Over the last three weeks, the show has only managed to sell about 62% of its available seats.

This will not be Sting's first time on Broadway. He played the lead role of Macheath in the 3 Penny Opera during the 1989 season for a total of 20 previews and 65 performances.

A formal announcement is expected on Monday.
