The seventh annual Orange Amplification Classic Rock Roll Of Honour in association with currencies.co.uk is now less than a week away and Steve Winwood, one of the most inspirational musicians the UK has ever produced, is to be honored by his songwriting peers and receive the Musicians’ Union Maestro Award.
Since the first ceremony in 2004, The Classic Rock Roll Of Honour has established itself as the music award ceremony for true music fans. And for the first time this year, they have teamed up with the Musicians’ Union to create a unique award that gives its 30,000+ members the opportunity to honour one of their peers for their contribution and dedication to music.
With a prestigious shortlist that included Don Airey, Bill Bruford, Phil Manzanera and Mike Rutherford, the legendary Steve Winwood came out on top.
Steve says: “I'm very honoured to be the recipient of this year’s Classic Rock Musicians’ Union Maestro Award. I've been a member of the MU for the majority of my professional career, spanning some 40-plus years now, I can safely say that even though the industry may change, it's good to know that there is a constant throughout, supporting musicians and musicians rights. Once again thank you."
Steve found initial success with the Spencer Davis Group, he had his first number one with ‘Keep On Running’. He went on to form numerous other groups including Traffic, super group Blind Faith with Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Ric Grech, which then evolved into Ginger Baker’s Air Force.
Winwood released his first solo record in 1977 and has gone on to release nine albums all finding great success. He has won multiple Grammy Awards, is a regular in Rolling Stone Magazine’s Greatest Singers Of All Time lists and has featured on albums by Jimi Hendrix, Lou Reed, Paul Weller, David Gilmour, and George Harrison to name but a few.
