Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s main focus in the wake of their split is their kids, say sources.

The two music stars announced their separation yesterday, ending nearly 13 years of marriage. In a joint statement they outlined how they remain partners in parenthood to their sons Kingston, nine, Zuma, six, and Apollo, 17 months.

"Their priority is making sure they maintain a safe and secure home for their children regardless of what's happening. When you're separated and have kids, you're much more emotionally invested,” a source told People.

"Knowing how she is as a mom, [Gwen’s] top priority is making sure her kids feel secure and comforted during the process."

The parting is said to be an amicable one, with another source revealing that despite their busy careers their children have always come first.

Gwen and Gavin’s commitment to their kids will continue to be their main focus.

"This is not a family that mostly relies on nannies. Gwen and Gavin are great parents and mostly handle school drop-offs and pick-ups themselves. Gavin is a jokester and often has the boys doubled over with laughter and Gwen is very nurturing. She often shows up to afternoon business meetings with Apollo napping in a baby carrier,” a second insider revealed.

The split comes as a shock to many, as 45-year-old Gwen openly spoke about how strong her marriage was in recent months.

In January the blonde singer gave an emotional interview, telling the Today show how proud she was of her union. A few weeks later she spoke to Cosmopolitan magazine about how hot she still finds 49-year-old Gavin.

“I never really saw myself landing a guy that hot. I don’t know if I was a nerd in high school, but I definitely wasn’t the super-cute cheerleader.

“So I never saw myself getting somebody like that. But I do think he’s quite handsome. It’s not the most important thing about him, but it is nice... and he makes really cute babies!” she exclaimed.
