Shakira and her partner have no power struggles.

The 37-year-old singer has been dating soccer player Gerard Piqué, 27, since 2010 and they have 15-month-old son Milan together. She may be ten years older than Gerard, but Shakira says they don't worry about who wears the trousers.

"In my house, I would say the balance of power is fairly equal. Relationships have to have a give and take if they're going to work in the long term," she opened up to Ocean Drive magazine.

The Colombian singer definitely looks like a powerful woman on the cover of the publication. In the black and white shot she throws the camera a seductive glance, clad in a zebra print dress.

"To me, being powerful means you are in control of yourself above all and know how to use your strengths to achieve things that are important to you - in my case, a lot of the time that ends up being philanthropic endeavours," she revealed.

The star is involved with many charities including Barefoot Foundation, a Colombian project that helps poor children, which she helped fund. Becoming a mother to little Milan has further shown Shakira what is important.

"Becoming a mother has forced me to slow down and reorganise my life to find a way to still be devoted to all the things I'm passionate about-music, philanthropy, and motherhood," she smiled.

The star has been busy recently, collaborating with Rihanna on hit Can't Remember to Forget You and promoting her latest self-titled album, which was released last month.

"Since my last album, I've entered one of the happiest phases of my life. It was definitely a time of change, of rebirth, of self-discovery, and of course becoming a mother, which turned my world on its head in the best of ways," she gushed.
