Soaring rock band Savages, have confirmed that they’ll be bringing their signature audio chaos to Wahaca’s Day of the Dead fiesta on November 7th this year.
Savages (vocalist Jehnny Beth, guitarist Gemma Thompson, bassist Ayse Hassan and drummer Fay Milton), who last month tore up the stage at Latitude festival, will join other top UK and Mexican acts for a celebration of both countries’ culture at London’s iconic Tobacco Dock.
From the UK, the music line-up will also include synth-rockers, The Horrors, who are currently working on a fifth album to follow last year’s hit record, ‘Luminous.’ This is a one off chance to see them perform live, as the only show on their schedule, whilst they devote their time to writing. Crystal Fighters, whose musical influences include Latin and African dance music, alongside folk and psychedelia, will take revellers on a melodic journey across universal themes of love, death, insanity and hope, at their first show in London since their sold out performance at Brixton academy last year.
Travelling especially from Mexico for the fiesta will be Grammy award winning, multi-platinum rock heroes, Zoé.
Mexrrissey, a Mexican supergroup with players from the country’s finest bands, united in their love of the Mancunian musical prophet, Morrissey, will take to the stage with their much-lauded Latino reinterpretations of his back catalogue. Morrissey himself has been adopted as something of a hero in Mexico, revered for his haunting melodies of love and loss, and after their recent riotous sold-out show at the Barbican, it’s clear the UK shares a similar affection for Mexrrissey.
As dark falls, UK and Mexican DJs will set the Mextronica stage alight. Making his UK debut, Erick Rincon of “3ball Mty” (Tribal Monterrey) will bring his uniquely hedonistic synth-tech sound to the Docks. Mad Decent’s Toy Selectah, the Mexican-Colombian mix-master famed for his clashing of Mexican soundscapes with contemporary urban rhythms; hip-hop, breakbeat and reggae, will further London’s immersive education in Mextronica.
The incendiary music line up at Wahaca’s Day of the Dead will be matched by equal creative talent in other areas, including contemporary and street art in partnership with the Saatchi Gallery and Mexicos Rodrigo Peñafiel, film, debate in collaboration with English PEN, theatre and of course eating and drinking from Wahaca, Thomasina Miers and Enrique Olvera, whose Mexico City restaurant, Pujol, is No. 16 in The World’s 50 Best.
Wahaca Presents Day of the Dead will be the culmination of a year-long ‘Culinary Trip’ programme of events by Wahaca with top Mexican chefs, curated by the Mexican restaurant group to celebrate the Year of Mexico in the UK. The fiesta will support the charity Periodistas de a Pie (Journalists on the Ground), which works to defend the rights of journalists and protect freedom of expression in Mexico.
