Sam Smith has swept the first round of the 2015 Billboard Music Awards nominations.

The ceremony takes place on May 17 in Las Vegas, and will see music's biggest names turn out for a glitzy evening.

The first five categories have been announced, with Brit singer Sam appearing in four of the groups. He's up for Top Artist, Top Male, Top Billboard 200 Album and Top Hot 100 Song.

It's been a mammoth 12 months for the 22-year-old soul singer, who burst on to the music scene with his debut album In the Lonely Hour in May 2014.

Since then he's scooped four Grammy Awards earlier this year, as well as two Brits and countless other accolades.

Taylor Swift fared just as well, landing all the same nominations as Sam (changing Top Male to Top Female).

Her track Shake It Off from hit album 1989 will battle it out against pop anthems Fancy by Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX, John Legend's All of Me, Sam's Stay With Me and All About That Bass from newcomer Meghan Trainor.

Billboard Music Awards host Ludacris and Fall Out Boy rocker Pete Wentz were on hand to announce the first nominations on Good Morning America earlier today.

Ludacris will be joined by John Legend's Chrissy Teigen next month to preside over the ceremony.
