Rihanna is glad she’s single as it means she doesn’t have to “babysit” anyone.
The singer split from baseball star Matt Kemp last year. She was then linked to Colin Farrell, but says she isn’t dating at the moment.
The 23-year-old is largely happy to be on her own, although there are times when she misses having a man.
“I mean, it is in a way because a relationship can feel like a chore, and that’s not good. That’s not what I need. I need an escape because this job is way too much anyway. So when I say it’s nice, it’s nice not having to babysit,” she told the November edition of UK Vogue magazine. “However, it’s a pain in the ass coming home alone after work to lay in a hotel bed with nobody to get you up unless it’s work related. But it makes no sense starting something you are going to stop, so I’m not rushing into anything.”
Rihanna’s relationship with Chris Brown famously ended after he assaulted her. She’s spoken about the incident at length in the past and believes it has made her stronger.
The incident made Rihanna think about how she appears to other people. Much has been made of her sexy image and provocative promos but she doesn’t think the criticism is fair.
For the star, her job is about the music and not about people looking up to her.
“See people – especially white people – they want me to be a role model just because of the life I lead. The things I say in my songs, they expect it of me and [being a role model] became more of my job that I wanted it to be. But no, I just want to make music. That’s it,” she said.
“Look, God doesn’t give you any more than you can handle. I had to get through a lot of ups and downs – big downs – and a lot of trial and error to get where I am now… I have a lot of clarity in my life now, more than ever before. And it’s nice being myself.”
The star is proud to be from Barbados, but it has caused her issues in the past. When she first started pursuing music away from her home country she ran into a problem with language.
“I have a necklace that says ‘****’,” she revealed. “Yeah, it’s funny, that word is so offensive to everyone in the world except Bajans. You know how African-Americans use the n-word to their brothers? Well that’s the way we use the c-word. When I first came here, I was saying it like it was nothing, like, ‘Hey ****,’ until my make-up artist finally had to tell me to stop. I just never knew.”
