Police do not believe Paris Jackson intended to kill herself, it has been reported.
The 15-year-old daughter of late singer Michael Jackson was hospitalised early on Wednesday morning after a suicide attempt. According to TMZ, Paris used a meat cleaver to cut her arm and ingested painkiller Motrin (Ibuprofen).
Although Los Angeles law enforcement classified the situation as a suicide attempt, information is apparently being gathered which suggests Paris’ behaviour was a cry for help.
"She wanted attention,” a source told the website. “Her call to a suicide hotline is compelling evidence she wanted to be saved.
"It makes no sense if you really want to die to call a hotline, where the person on the other end will get an ambulance over to your house."
When emergency services arrived to treat Paris she is believed to have been conscious. It has also been reported that she didn’t argue or struggle when she was placed on a stretcher and taken to a Southern California hospital.
"Who takes Motrin to kill themselves?” a source told TMZ. “She called the suicide hotline because she wanted the attention and wanted to make sure EMTs got there in time."
Another report has suggested the Jackson family has been worried about Paris’ behaviour for more than six months.
According to insiders, Paris has been exhibiting mood swings and those close to the teenager believe she may have bipolar disorder.
“Especially within the past few weeks, Paris has acted even more strangely,” an insider told Chicago Sun-Times.
“Fortunately, she now is getting some good psychological counselling in the hospital that will obviously continue after she is released,” a Jackson family staff member reportedly told the publication on Wednesday.
Paris’ biological mother Debbie Rowe admits her daughter has “a lot going on”, and her hospitalisation comes just weeks before the fourth anniversary of Michael’s death.
Paris reportedly has had a series of arguments with her family in recently weeks, and is said to have “flipped out” when she wasn’t allowed to attend a Marilyn Manson concert in Los Angeles.
“It was the usual teenage stuff about where Paris was allowed to go and what she could wear. But it must have pushed her to breaking point,” a source told British newspaper The Sun. “She has suffered terrible bullying recently. All the allegations about Michael abusing children have been back in the news, plus details of his drug use and even questions about whether he is the kids’ biological father.
“Paris was also due to give evidence at her dad’s wrongful death trial. It has all taken its toll.”
Michael’s mother, Katherine Jackson, has been co-guardian of the teen and her two brothers since the popstar’s 2009 death.
On Wednesday afternoon Katherine said that Paris is “fine and getting appropriate medical attention”.
