Billboard has issued its 2015 survey of the top money makers in music.
The artists are ranked by estimated money made for the year in album and track sales, streaming revenue, publishing royalties and touring. Other streams of revenue such as merchandise, sponsorships and synchronizations were not included in the totals.
One Direction topped the list, taking in $46 million followed by Katy Perry with $30.1 million and Justin Timberlake with $27.9 million. Then comes the two veteran artists with Billy Joel in fourth with $27.2 million and the Eagles in fifth with $26.2 million. For both artists, the vast majority of their income came from touring with Billy Joel bringing in big money from his monthly residency at Madison Square Garden.
Other artists in the top ten include Paul McCartney (#7), George Strait (#8) and Jay-Z (#9).
Overall, concert revenue was the main way artists made money, accounting for over 80% of income. Sales of music was 13.3%, publishing 4.2% and streaming 2.1%.
