One Direction once got sent mushrooms dressed as them for a gift.

The British boyband shot to fame in 2010, with members Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson instantly winning fans the world over. Their admirers go to great lengths to stand out; sometimes with surprising consequences.

"Remember the first thing we got? Someone had picked some mushrooms, cooking mushrooms, and they drew our faces on them and put googly eyes on them and they dressed them up as us. That was quite a strange one," Liam laughed to US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.

Niall added: "Remember the time we had the hermit crab? A live crab."

Jimmy was interested to hear if the lads are ever propositioned by fans' mothers. While the singers stayed quiet on specifics, they admitted they sometimes wondered about older women's motives.

"Sometimes [the mums] almost like push [their kids] out the way," Harry laughed.

"There's been a couple where the mum's have been like, 'Oh, my daughter loves you.' And you look at the daughter and she's like [pulls face]. Not that bothered."

Liam explained: "Sometimes the kid doesn't even want to be there, the mum's just brought the kid as a scapegoat."

The group were also quizzed on their famous visit to Johnny Depp's home. The actor's daughter Lily-Rose is a big fan so Johnny invited them over, much to their excitement.

"He has one house that's like a music studio and he's got all these like cool guitars and stuff in there," Liam marvelled. "He showed us some recordings he'd done with some people. It was so interesting and so crazy, you just find yourself in the most surreal situation. And so often he does sound like Captain Jack Sparrow."
