Miley Cyrus could reportedly face detainment for allowing one of her dancers to spank her with a Mexican flag.
The 21-year-old pop star stirred controversy after an independence day performance in Monterrey on Tuesday, during which she apparently celebrated by twerking while being smacked on the backside with the national symbol.
Now she’s the subject of a controversial proposal circling in the legislature in the northern state of Nuevo Leon, according to Reuters.
Francisco Trevino reportedly told the outlet his fellow lawmakers have approved a warrant allowing the Interior Ministry to enforce a law dictating inappropriate use of the flag.
According to Reuters, that could mean detainment of up to 36 hours or a $1,200 fine for Miley or members of her team.
A spokesperson for the star had yet to comment on the report at press time.
Miley is no stranger to controversy.
The star was set to perform a show in Santo Domingo on September 13 as part of her Bangerz Tour, but the Dominican Republic’s national entertainment and radio commission (CNEPR) didn’t authorise the concert, citing lewdness.
In a statement released last month, the CNEPR stated Miley “undertakes acts that go against morals and customs, which are punishable by Dominican law” in her concerts.
Miley reportedly answered cancellation by filing papers in a Dominican court, according to E! News.
A source told the outlet earlier this month she claims the council’s ban on artistic expression goes against the nation’s constitution.
"Miley wants to defend artistic expression for all artists," an insider said of her reported legal challenge.
