Miley Cyrus is in awe of Dolly Parton’s ability to “say it like it is”.

The legendary country singer is Miley’s honorary godmother.

Speaking in an interview to be aired on US TV network Ovation’s forthcoming Song by Song series, Miley discussed what makes Dolly so special.

"The things people say about you that are negative are usually so ignorant that when she comes back with something that's funny, but it's also intelligent, it just shuts them down and nobody can ever say anything about her because she always can one-up them with something sweet," she says.

“And not hurt anyone's feelings but say it like it is."

Dolly was given the role of Miley’s honorary godmother due to her close friendship with the star’s father Billy Ray Cyrus, who used to open shows for her.

“[I told Billy Ray], I don’t know if I’ll be around to where I can actually do all the duties that a godmother does,” Dolly once said about her role. “So let me be her fairy godmother.”

The upcoming programme looks at the impact of six of Dolly’s greatest hits including 9 to 5, Jolene and I Will Always Love You, which was also a hit for Whitney Houston.

Miley, who is engaged to actor Liam Hemsworth, took the chance to share her thoughts on the famously powerful love song.

“If you really love someone you should let them go – that’s what she says,” mused the 20-year-old singer. “And I think everyone has had that moment in their life when they had to not think about themselves.”
