Melanie Chisholm feels like “girl power has gone too far” in the music industry.
The 40-year-old former Spice Girls singer, who is nicknamed Sporty Spice and also known as ‘Mel C’, is slightly concerned about the hypersexualisation depicted by certain female pop stars nowadays.
Mel simply isn’t sure whether being sexy to the extreme necessarily sends a good message.
“For me it’s almost like what we did with girl power has gone too far the other way, which defeats the object,” she explained to British newspaper The Mirror.
“I appreciate that it’s a different generation now, but I don’t consider that empowering.”
The Spice Girls, which was originally comprised of Mel C, Melanie ‘Mel B’ Brown, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham and Geri Halliwell, enjoyed their heyday between 1994 to 2000.
And Melanie remembers the band being the recipients of criticism for how they performed.
“It’s a long time ago since the Spice Girls were first together and we were criticised for being sexual,” she recalled.
“Yes, we wore crop tops, I mean look how much has changed.”
Melanie is mother to five-year-old daughter, Scarlet.
Although the little girl is a huge fan of Rihanna, the star won’t let her child watch the Barbadian beauty’s music videos.
“My girl Scarlet is a big fan of Rihanna, but I won’t let her watch the videos – they’re too sexual,” Mel C said.
“I protect my daughter from it while I can, but she’s growing up fast.”
