LL Cool J was "so happy" when he met Meryl Streep.

Despite his cool exterior and rapper credentials LL, real name James Todd Smith, can't help but fan out when he meets fellow celebrities he admires.

The 47-year-old made his name in music in the mid 80s with his urban sound, but found himself completely starstruck when he met all American singer Bruce Springsteen.

"Well, I'm a hip hop artist and I'm from the inner city and when I was a kid, I'd watch his videos and see him doing big things. Just because I'm a different genre doesn't mean I don't appreciate people like that," LL explained to British newspaper Metro.

"I loved Michael Jackson. I think he was the best. I was star-struck by Meryl Streep too. I've met her a couple of times at Hollywood parties and was so happy."

As well as music LL has enjoyed a successful acting career too. TV audiences will know him as Sam Hanna in NCIS: Los Angeles, and he admits some fans are too young to know of his rapping career.

"It depends who it is," he mused when asked if some fans give him grief for not doing more music.

"There are younger kids who have absolutely no idea that I've made a lot of music and then there are slightly older people who are really excited about the idea I have a new record coming out."

Looking back on his early days when he was just breaking into the charts, LL recalls being a big spender with his new found wealth.

As well as treating himself to a fleet of luxury motors he also splashed his cash on his family.

"When I started out I bought my mother a house and I had ten or 12 cars - BMWs, [Mercedes] Benzes, Porches," he smiled.
