Jordin Sparks wanted her fans to hear a different side of her with her new track.
The 24-year-old singer opens up about ex Jason Derulo in the song, a remix of Drake’s track How Bout Now.
And while the tune is worlds away from Jordin’s usual material, with explicit references to her former relationship, she said she felt it was time to share her experiences with her fans.
"Every day was different and every day something new came out [during writing and recording sessions], and that day I was having one of those days where I was like, 'I'm just going to do it and I want my fans to hear this side of me. They need to hear it.' Jordin told E! News. “My fans wanted to hear something but at the same time it wasn't really planned and I just went into the studio and whatever came out, came out.”
Jordin also revealed that while she felt the time was right to release the track, she was also dubious about the reaction it would receive.
The lyrics of the song include: “You really f**ked with me way back when, but how about now?/ 'Cause I'm up right now and you suck right now."
"I knew it was going to get crazy," Jordin said while at an event promoting the Microsoft Lumia’s Make It Happen campaign.
"I was nervous to put it out there because no one had ever heard me like this before."
How Bout Now is taken from Jordin’s upcoming album Right Here, Right Now.
