Green Day will perform at this week's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) following singer Billie Joe Armstrong's hospitalisation.

The veteran punk band was forced to cancel a show in Bologna, Italy, on Sunday night after Billie Joe was rushed to hospital.

No details were given at the time, but group members Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool issued a video apology to fans on the band's website, revealing they were "devastated" at the situation.

Despite Billie Joe's health scare, a spokesperson for Green Day confirmed the band's attendance at the VMAs to MTV.

"The VMA veterans will be in Los Angeles for their rehearsal on Wednesday and they are ready to plug in for the big show after a recent health scare for singer Billie Joe Armstrong," the site writes.

Despite the news that Green Day will play at the hotly-anticipated ceremony, US website TMZ have reported that Billie Joe is struggling with his throat.

Upon his arrival in Los Angeles earlier this week the star "mouthed that his voice is completely gone".
