Duran Duran put their success down to getting women dancing - because it encouraged men to come to their shows.
The British band is comprised of Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Roger Taylor. They are currently celebrating the release of their 14th record Paper Gods, and have been open about how they've achieved longevity.
"The smart guys went to Duran Duran concerts because that's where the girls were," Simon laughed to Rolling Stone magazine. "They might not have liked us when they walked in, but by the end of the concert they had a bit of affection for Duran Duran."
Nick has no problem admitting the group didn't have a macho bone in their bodies when they started out. That meant they weren't worried about trying to be the hot new thing; instead, they wanted to have fun on stage. This translated into the audience, which is why women flocked to see them performing.
"Some bands are really happy with being a band that people have to sit down and get stoned to. But, you know, I like to get people up and dancing. There's a lot to be said for being a party band. It's a hell of a lot of fun," Simon added.
That said, the singer realises not many people expect the group to still be making music in 2015. Paper Gods includes collaborations with a number of artists, among them Janelle Monáe and Lindsay Lohan. Taylor Swift has also shown herself to be a fan by making a track called New Romantics, the movement Duran Duran are linked to, but Simon realises how surprising it is the group is still relevant.
"What do you call those horses, not the favourites, the ones with the long odds? In the '80s, if you were betting on bands that might make the 14th album, we would not have been in the top ten," he laughed.
