Demi Lovato thinks it’s incredibly important her new album is “authentic”.

The 22-year-old former Disney star released her last offering, Demi, in 2013 and the record was laced with pop hits like Neon Lights and Heart Attack.

Demi is hard at work on her fifth studio release and she is committed to challenging herself while composing songs for this album.

“This year, it's super important to me that I embrace who I am as an artist and to become more authentic to who I am,” she told ET Online. “I want to release music that is different, that I've never done before... and that showcases who I am and what I can do vocally. I’m excited to explore with different sounds which is what I’m doing in the studio right now and to see what comes about.”

Demi has a number of dream collaborators and would love to work with her friends Nick Jonas and Nicki Minaj.

But some of the artists she’d ideally like to work with are totally outside of her genre.

“Kelly Clarkson, duh!” she smiled. “And, I would love to work with Eminem actually… I can relate to him with being in recovery and things like that so I think we could make something awesome together.”

Demi is even considering adding more slow songs to her new album.

However, she assures fans there will definitely be some dancy tunes to look forward to.

“You can expect ballads, but it’s all about balance,” Demi said.
