David Bowie has celebrated his 66th birthday with the shock release of new single 'Where Are We Now?'.
Online speculation of an impending release had been growing ahead of his first new album in 10 years.
'Where Are We Now?' is released today on iTunes in 119 countries, costing £0.99.
The follow-up album 'The Next Day' is set to be released in March and can be preordered for £10.99, see tracklisting below. It will be the glam legend's 30th studio recording.
Bowie has not performed live since 2006 and has rarely been seen in public since leading to rumours of ill-health which have always been denied.
Produced by long term collaborator Tony Visconti, 'Where Are We Now?' was written by Bowie, and was recorded in New York. The single is accompanied by a haunting video, see it below, directed by Tony Oursler which harks back to David's time in Berlin. He is seen looking in on footage of the auto repair shop beneath the apartment he lived in along with stark images of the city at the time and a lyric constantly raising the question Where Are We Now?
A major figure for over four decades, Bowie is widely regarded as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s. His distinctive voice as well as intellectual depth and considerable eclecticism of his work sees him still highly regarded by fans and musicians alike.
