Ghost: The Musical with words and music by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard with additional input on lyrics from Bruce Joel Rubin opens tonight (Monday) on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontaine Theatre.
The musical is based on the 1990 film starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg that won the Academy Award for Goldberg as Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay for Rubin. Musically, it is most famous for bringing the Righteous Brothers' recording of Unchained Melody back to the public mind and making it a new standard.
The musical originally premiered on May 14, 2011 in Manchester, U.K. and moved to London's West End on July 19 of the same year. On Broadway, the show began previews on March 15 leading up to tonight's opening. The two leads in New York are Richard Fleeshman as Sam Wheat and Caissie Levy as Molly Jensen, who originated the roles in London. Da'Vine Joy Randolph plays Oda Mae Brown.
Ballard and Stewart had previously worked together writing a German-language musical based on the film Barbarella that premiered in 2004.
