Charli XCX thought she'd become like Britney Spears after signing a record deal.

The British singer has gained worldwide success thanks to tracks such as Boom Clap and Iggy Azalea's Fancy.

While she's only 22 and doing so well, Charli has been making music since she was 14 so her recognition has been a long time coming.

"With everything I do, it has to be 100 per cent me. I think that's part of the reason it's taken me so long to get where I am. It's a constant fight to get people to understand my vision and do things my way," she sighed to ASOS magazine. "I thought I'd sign a record deal and be like Britney Spears. I didn't know how much I'd have to fight and defend my ideas. A lot of people think that because I'm a girl and I'm young that I'll be like, 'Yeah, that's cool,' and stand on the stage and look pretty."

In contrast, Charli describes herself as a control freak. She may have been shy and insecure until recently, but her newfound confidence has enabled her to speak her mind. After her track I Love It for Icona Pop made the charts, Charli felt ready to take things into her own hands.

Her music sounds like "The Ramones and Barbie had sex" and is loud and sassy. She surrounds herself with fellow strong females, such as Robyn and Rita Ora, who she collaborated with on Doing It.

"Rita is so fun and so refreshing to be around," Charli smiled. "I'm stubborn and I have goals. I want to have my fingerprints all over the radio forever, not necessarily me singing the songs always, but writing. I've set the bar very high for myself."
