A one day music festival ‘Carnaby Sound’ will be held in Carnaby, on Saturday 6 July from 12 – 7pm as part of the area’s celebration of music heritage.

This FREE consumer event will feature live music from musicians, artists and bands covering the range of music genres that have been playing in Carnaby over the last 10 decades, from Jazz and Blues to Mod, Urban and Rock. In addition to live music there will be alfresco dining, complimentary drinks, shopping offers and promotions from shops, bars and restaurants in the area.

Carnaby is celebrating 10 decades of music throughout 2013 with events, exhibitions and pop-ups. The history starts from the first Jazz club – Murray’s, which opened on Beak Street in 1913 to the Mods of the 1960s through to the Punks and New Romantics of the 1980s to today.

No shopping street in the world can boast a real connection with music and popular culture quite like Carnaby Street. Music and fashion have walked hand in hand ever since the young entrepreneur John Stephen opened his first boutique in 1958. Carnaby became a mecca for the new Mods, seriously into their sharp threads. By 1964 Lord John had opened, and owner Warren Gold found himself dressing the young John Lennon, Brian Jones and Mick Jagger. Now that’s rock ‘n’ roll and we like it. Carnaby was not only a place where musicians came to shop, they also came to play in clubs such as The Roaring Twenties and The Bag O Nails - including Jimi Hendrix, The Who and The Kinks, whose hit record ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’ pays homage to Carnaby Street.

Music is built into the fabric of the area. Liam Gallagher chose Carnaby Street as the location for his flagship Pretty Green fashion store and independent The Great Frog makes jewellery for the likes of Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Pete Doherty, Lady Gaga and The Arctic Monkeys.

Carnaby is in the heart of London’s West End, 2 minutes away from Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus, where over 150 brands of quality and distinction and over 50 independent restaurants and bars can be found across 13 streets, including the world famous Carnaby Street, creating a unique experiential shopping destination, not to be found anywhere else in the world.
