Carly Rae Jepsen finds song inspirations on aeroplanes.

The Call Me Maybe singer is constantly travelling for work, which means she racks up her fair share of air miles. But rather than chill out up in the sky, the 29-year-old finds it's a great time to write lyrics.

"I get ideas in the middle of the night and I normally stumble around in the dark for my phone and record them," she smiled to British magazine Very.

"The other place is aeroplanes, which can be awkward. I can come up with a melody that I need to get down before I forget it, but the only way to record it is to grab your iPhone and go and sing in the toilet. It happened to me on a flight recently. The people next to me must have thought I had the smallest bladder in the world because I kept disappearing to the toilet to record this song."

Following her 2012 smash hit Call Me Maybe, things were fairly quiet around Carly for a while. Now she's back with album Emotion and catchy single I Really Like You.

"It's very 80s but it isn't all 'bubblegum pop'," she explained of the new record. "There are slower jams too and more mature subject matters and emotional songs. I wanted to let myself go to both places."

Emotion is set to be released on June 24.
