Céline Dion has cancelled her Asia tour and postponed other shows because of her husband's cancer.

The 46-year-old singer tied the knot with her spouse René Angélil, 72, in 1994, after having first met in 1980. Together they have sons René-Charles and twins Eddy and Nelson.

René has a tumour removed from his throat last December, and due to the "difficult and stressful" time Céline has decided to take some time out to be there for him.

She has abandoned dates of her Asia stint, meant to start on November 11 in Nagoya, Japan. She was scheduled to start a Las Vegas residency on Friday at the city's Caesars Palace, but she has postponed that also.

"I want to devote every ounce of my strength and energy to my husband's healing, and to do so, it's important for me to dedicate this time to him and to our children," she explained to People. "I also want to apologise to all my fans everywhere, for inconveniencing them, and I thank them so much for their love and support."

It seems this time out will also benefit Céline herself, who has been suffering from inflammation in her throat muscles.

Last month the star spoke out to reporters about her husband's health following a fundraising event for Montreal's Sainte-Justine’s children’s hospital.

This is René's second battle with cancer after previously being treated in 1999, and Céline appeared to be positive about his recovery while speaking in July.

"Life imposes some things on you but he’s doing really well. He’s working hard, he’s really being disciplined, which is not an easy thing for him. So he’s very disciplined, he’s working hard, he’s playing with the kids, he’s having a good time," she said.
