The U2 frontman ' who underwent back surgery in Germany following an accident while preparing for a world tour ' admits he is on the mend thanks to the help of doctors in the country.

He said: 'I'm ready, rebuilt by German engineering. Better design, I'm told.

'I'm very well. I can sit. I can stand. I can move about a bit. Feeling strong, feeling confident, you know what I'm saying?'

The 50-year-old singer had to pull out of the North American leg of his band's tour and a planned appearance at Glastonbury festival due to the spinal injury, and he apologised for causing disruption to people in the wake of the cancellations.

In a video posted on U2's website, Bono added: "I actually wanted to apologise for the trouble that this injury has put you all through and those of you that bought tickets and organized hotels and travel plans, it's a very big deal.we don't take you for granted. It was not a lot of fun for me, the injury was quite serious."

Although he had to pull out of the legendary Glastonbury appearance, his bandmate The Edge did make a guest appearance with British rockers Muse.
