About the song Dylan once said, “It was ten pages long. It wasn’t called anything, just a rhythm thing on paper all about my steady hatred directed at some point that was honest. In the end it wasn’t hatred, it was telling someone something they didn’t know, telling them they were lucky. Revenge, that’s a better word. I had never thought of it as a song, until one day I was at the piano, and on the paper it was singing, “How does it feel?” in a slow motion pace, in the utmost of slow motion”.
From our friends at VVNMusic … Bob Dylan is once again dipping into his vast catalog of studio and live recordings for the twelfth edition of his Bootleg Series, The Cutting Edge 1965-1966. To be released in 2-CD, 6-CD and 18-CD sets, the album will be out on October 6 via Columbia/Legacy.
This time around, the focus is on the studio sessions for the iconic albums Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde. Released in 1965 and 1966, the albums included such classic songs as Subterranean Homesick Blues, She Belongs to Me, Mr. Tambourine Man, It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding), It’s All Over Now Baby Blue, Like a Rollings Stone, Highway 61 Revisited, Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues, Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35 and Just Like a Woman.
In other words, what would exceed the full classic output of most artists is contained in just these three Dylan albums.
The 2-CD version of the set gives listeners insight into the creative process for these three classics including alternate takes, rehearsals, demos and isolated instruments from many of the tracks.
For the 6-CD set, the scope of the studio recordings widens to multiple versions of many of the songs including a full disc devoted to Like a Rollings Stone with 19 takes, a rehearsal and the isolated instrument tracks.
Finally, the 18-CD set, which will be available only through BobDylan.com and issued in a limited edition of 5,000, includes every note recorded during the 1965-1966 sessions, every alternate take and alternate lyric. All previously unreleased recordings have been mixed, utilizing the original studio tracking tapes as the source, eliminating unwanted 1960s-era studio processing and artifice. The 18CD edition includes Dylan’s original nine mono 45 RPM singles released during the time period, packaged in newly created picture sleeves featuring global images from the era. The limited edition includes rare hotel room recordings from the Savoy Hotel in London (May 4, 1965), the North British Station Hotel in Glasgow (May 13, 1966) and a Denver, Colorado hotel (March 12, 1966) as well as a strip of original film cells from “Don’t Look Back.”
In addition, the albums come with an annotated book featuring hundreds of rare and never-before-seen photographs and memorabilia and new essays penned especially for the collection by Bill Flanagan and Sean Wilentz.
